Most of the infestations that generally take place in households begin with a small hole in a wall or external drainage system. Most plumbing systems in houses constitute pipes with small diameters, which stay dry most of the time, making it an ideal place for rats and other rodents to find warmth in there and look for food. These small pipes are enough for rats to pass through them, since rats are able to squeeze their bodies into smallest of their size.

If there are no apparent ways you think a rat can enter your building, then the problem might lie somewhere underground. Rats are known to make homes in drains, as drains are rich source of food and these drains interconnect most buildings in the area. Any defect in the drains will give the rats an opportunity to make their way through the pipes into your house, and hide themselves in the basements or attic space. Rats can easily chew off pipes to make an entry, so once they are in your drainage system, it is very common that you would find them roaming around in your property.

Signs of rat infestation

Considering how possible it is for rats to get into your building, here are the signs of rat infestation you should look out for:

  • Small rat droppings in the corners of the room or behind the furniture

  • Lingering smell of urine
  • Scratching and tapping noises at night from the ceiling and behind the walls
  • Trail marks on the walls
  • Chewed off surfaces of food, furniture and fabric
  • Rat nests, especially in places with soft insulations like cardboard

Rat habitation in your homes can have severe effects on your living and health. Their presence can lead to drain blockages, degradation, and damage to the walls of your house, furniture and structure. These rats spread unpleasant smells and deadly diseases wherever they go. It is not a surprise that rats were known for spreading the bubonic plague epidemic in the past. These diseases can be fatal, especially if you have kids around who have the habit of putting things in their mouth off the ground. It becomes very important to conduct a proper rat checkup and have prevention measures taken accordingly.

How to assess their entry points

The most effective method of assessing where the rats are entering from is to have a thorough drain inspection survey. Call in the Greenday environmental rat drain survey team and We undertake extensive cctv drain surveys to find the drainage defects that allow rats to leave the sewers and enter your home

The CCTV drain survey will look for drain defects, fractured pipes, and displaced joints. These cameras will also monitor any movement in the drains, provide you with digital images and full survey reports.

Once you have all the information, you can then move on to sealing defective pipes, putting in valves to stop the rats from breaking in, and repair broken joints.

Drainage Problems – The Biggest Contributor to Rat Infestation in Homes

Drainage Problems & Rat Infestation

Free Phone - 1800-668-800

Rats, the unwelcomed inhabitants in our homes, are associated with plague and many deadly diseases such as E-coli, flea infestations - even tuberculosis. And why shouldn’t they be? They have their nose in everything, every dirty place – they are bound to carry the germs along with them wherever they go.

Why are rats really a problem for our homes? Because they sniff on our food, they chew through clothes, furniture, and even metal pipes – due to their strong teeth and unmatchable survival powers. No matter what measures we take to get rid of them, they always find a way back into our homes.

Where do they get in from?

Drainage and sewers seem to be their favorite spot, especially if our food waste is being drained into the sewers. Rats are known for their low hunger tolerance and they will go wherever they can in search of food. Sewers are mostly the place where all the waste is dumped, so rats are usually found there the most.

Since rats are nocturnal creatures, you cannot spot them during the day. However, if you hear tiptoeing during the night from the ceilings and vents, you know you have intruders. Drainage systems are the easiest way for rats to break an entry into your house, but it is not easily detected because of all the waste that goes down there.

Rat infestation becomes even more possible if the pipelines down the drain are damaged, as it gives a pathway to the rats to travel all the way from public sewers and to your drainage system. According to a survey, up to 90% of the rat problems in your house stem from a drainage defect. And we hate to break it to you, but rats can actually swim all their way up in your toilet. Sounds gross, right?

How do we fix this?

Rat prevention in drains

It is not easily detectable if rats are getting the entry from the drains, and it is not possible to simply have a look down there. The first step would be a complete drain inspection to find out any possible defects. After that, we will be able to take measures to fix those defects and block the entries rats have made.

For drain inspection, CCTV drainage survey for rats is the best way to find the rat infestation problems associated with drains, by using small cameras with special night tools that can be easily implanted in such closed spaces. Your professional rat pest control service will guide you on how to install these devices down there and exterminate the rats once the problem has been detected. Prevention is your best option in this case and for that, a regular inspection is must, which will be easy if you have an automated survey system installed in your drains.

So, if you have been hearing tapping and toeing behind the walls and under the floorboard, call in a Greenday Drainage Services for professional help you get rid of rat infestation.

Dealing With Blocked Drains

Pipes and drain pipes are a vital part of your home's drainage system. Most modern systems use plastic tubes and accessories. If your sink, faucet or tub is slowly draining, try to fix it right away. If it does not, it could be harder to fix.

Try Non-Toxic Tricks to Open the Stuffy Sewer Pipe

When the blocked sewer line and blocked drains Dublin does not pull in the kitchen or in the bathroom properly, rather than a chemical referred to the opening of the pipes is not at hand, try to open the salt. In the acute distress of salt which can be found in the kitchen. Mix half a cup of salt to less than one liter of warm water and pour into the drain. Repeat the procedure if necessary. The salt load on the environment for less toxic substances is for the opening of the tubes.

Try A Drain Survey

A drainage survey is also commonly referred to a drainage inspection. The idea behind this survey is to evaluate the pipes of a home to determine if there are any apparent problems. In most cases, drainage surveys are done before buying a home and are the perfect way to gain insight about the integrity of the home’s piping system. These surveys are conducted using CCTV cameras that are fed through the pipes; this camera relays images to the inspector. This gives the inspector power to precisely locate any anomalies and quickly articulate a solution.

What are the cause of a blocked sewer pipe and blocked drains?

Often the source of the problem are the tree roots looking for moisture that appears around the outside of the tubes; these roots eventually rupture and cause a little obstruction.

Blocked toilets resulting from blocked drains can also be caused by flushing things down the toilet. These items often include napkins, hair and other things.

How to Prevent Such Hazards?

Depending on the situation there is the possibility of clogged/blocked pipes - a replacement may be needed in that scenario. If the problem is caused by the roots of the tree, then the problem worsens as more tree roots are attracted by moisture filtered through the rupture. For prevention of blocked drains and blocked toilets, there are also several chemicals that can be purchased at your local hardware store that can be emptied or water your drains to help maintain your blocked drains.

Traps are a very important part of your drainage system. They are water seals that let odor come into your house through the scouring points of your sinks, and toilets. Each plumbing installation that discharges waste water into the drainage system is equipped with a trap, or incorporates one into its design. The traps are made of plastic and come in a variety of designs to suit different uses.  Each time you remove a stopper or empty a toilet, a small amount of water remains in the trap, which creates a seal.

Tips to unblock drain

Natural Drain Cleaners

If you’re trying to make it an environment-friendly process, try natural ingredients before relying on chemicals.

1] Fill a cup with baking soda. Ensure your sink is dry before trying this method.

2] Pour it down your blocked drain. Throw down 2 cups of boiling water.

After a few minutes of interval, add another cup of baking soda. Then pour down a cup of white plain vinegar. Finally, plug the blocked drain. As soon as you hear a sizzling noise and bubbles emitting from the drain, stop. Add another couple of cups of boiling water.

If the doesn’t work, try the coat hanger trick. Pick a coat hanger. Straighten it as much as it possible. Make a hook on one end. Now place it beyond the cover of the drain and starting fishing. Avoid snapping the hangar by exerting too much force on it. Remove all the gunk and hair you can get hold of using the hanger.

Now pour 3 cups of boiling water down the blocked drain. Hopefully, it will work just fine.

If not, continue to the next step.

Boil a kettle full of water. Throw it down the drain slowly. Repeat twice until you can hear the sizzling noise and bubbles appear.

Another method is to use a household plunger. Fill the dry drain with enough water so that it covers the plunger cup. Make sure the plug is in the other sink if plugging a double sink. Ensure that the cup is airless. Feel for the blockage to move. Then flush the drain out using boiling water.

If all else fails, use caustic soda as a last resort. Before using that, wear proper rubber gloves and goggles since caustic soda contains hazardous chemicals. Mix the soda with water is a bucket. Ensure that you use a wooden stick to avoid direct contact with the body. When it start fizzing, heat the solution and pour it down the drain. Leave it for about 30 minutes or so. Then flush the drain with hot water.

If it doesn’t solve the problem, repeat the procedure.

Beware, do not use a plunger when using caustic soda. Doing so, can produce a dangerous chemical splash back. Never use chemicals with completely blocked drains. This might lead to hazardous chemicals accumulating in your pipes and ultimately causing more damage.

3 Steps to overcome basement drain backup nuisance!

Did you walk into your basement one fine day, only to be welcomed by water—sewerage water!

Wondering what may have caused your basement drain backups?

Here are some reasons why your sewerage water may have crept out of the drains and into your basements!

  • The sewers are full: There is a certain amount of water sewerage pipes can hold into. In case of rains and storms—sewer systems can overload and burst
  • There are drain blockages: This is one of the most frequent reasons why basement drain backups. Blockages can be due to household waste items through toilet drain, debris and roots from trees that have crept into the sewerage lines and caused the blockage.
  • There is seepage: At times, water levels can be extremely high and creep into the basement through cracked walls and holes. Seepage is likely to happen in the case of heavy downpours or snow-melting weather.

Drain repair: What to do?

When the basement drain backs up—one of the essential things to do first is find out where the problem occurs. In most cases, it is due to the weak foundation of the house that allows for leaks to take place from holes and cracks.

This does not mean your homes are built with inferior quality material as houses built with premium components can also be victim to leaks. Whether it’s raised sewerage levels due to storm/rain water, or unsatisfactory soil drainage—can all create a leak in the basement.

Additionally, unnoticed mould and cracks exhibited on the walls and moist areas in your basements can also cause foundation leaks. Drain and sewer cleaning can help repair these problems by fixing downspouts, gutter lines, and any other problem that can potentially cause water to sweep through your basements/homes.

Drain cleaning: Fix it

After evaluating the core and potential problems that can cause basement drain backups, it’s time to fix the problem. One way to perform drain repair is through using liquid drain cleaners that are produced with active, enzyme based components that can perform efficient drain and sewer cleaning. Most expert drain cleaners recommend pouring a large portion of the liquid into the drain overnight for best results.

Often times, basement drain cleaners (liquid) may fail. Look out for plumbers/drain cleaner’s water jetting in your basements. This process is effective, quick, easy and usually affordable to help combat basement drain problems and keep your drainage line running smoothly in the long run.

You can also consider installing a backwater valve if your sewage draining issues are recurring. Backwater valves are generally used in basements where drain backups occur and laundry machines. However, to assess whether backwater valves are good for your drain and sewerage positions—consult professional drain cleaners or plumbers.

Follow aforementioned steps to overcome drain backups in your basement. Don’t wait for tomorrow, get your living spaces evaluated today for moulds and cracks to avoid costly repairs in future!

Oil Spill Cleanup – A Basic Guide To rapid Response Remediation

The oil spill is a potential danger to the environment and human health. In case of a spill, effective oil spill response services in Ireland are crucial for containing the situation and mitigating any health hazard to people and the environment. People know how dangerous it is to tackle such situation on their own and therefore it is essential that they contact an oil spill cleanup company to clear the spill immediately.

Each spill is of a different kind. Though some are easy to clean, under no circumstances should you hose them or use any kind of detergent to clean them. The oil can easily spread and cause more pollution. In the meantime, as the help is arriving, you can use special absorbent cloths to contain the spill. The oil spill is extremely dangerous and hence, once it occurs, your best approach to control and contain this situation is to call for an oil spill cleanup.

Types of Oil Spills
  • Heating Oil Spills
  • Kerosene Oil Spills
  • Diesel Oil Spills
  • Harbor Fuel Oil Spills
  • Industry Spills

Oil spill remediation is also one of the most frequent problems that can cause an unsafe habitat. The spills caused on any open land, if not resolved, quickly turn into a huge danger zone. These lands can be ignited by just a single cigarette bud which someone forgot to put out. A team of professional oil spill cleaners should be called on the site so that they can ensure that a certain procedure is followed for the cleanup operation.

Oil Spill Response Procedure

  1. The first priority is to find the source of the oil spill and make sure that in no way will it ignite
  2. If the oil spill is in water then a foss-boom i.e. a floating barrier is used to contain the spill. If the spill is on land, trenches and berms are used instead.
  3. Any of the following methods is used to scoop up the oil:
  • Vacuum Extraction
  • In-Situ Oxidation
  • Chemical Oxidation
  • Ex-Situ Oxidation
  • Dual Phase Extraction
  • Pump and Treat
  1. The spill is collected in containers and is disposed of in a legal manner
  2. A full report is provided to you on how and by what method the spill was cleaned
  3. It is important to call an oil spill response team if you see any oil spills near or on your land. These companies use experienced professionals who know how to handle these kinds of situations. Even though it is dangerous to clean the spill yourself, you can at least try to stop the spill with floating booms until help arrives. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

How Does A Grease Trap Or Grease Interceptor Work?

Call  01 450 9778 for grease trap sales, service, and maintenance enquiries

The buildup of waste in the drainage system can cause some serious and expensive clogs. For this reason, grease traps (or grease interceptors) are designed to hamper Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG), solid waste material, and debris that creep into the drainage system of municipal or privately owned on-site sewerage systems.

How Does Grease Trap Work?

The use of grease traps dates back from the Victorian days of 1800’s. Today, almost after 100 years, the technology of grease trap has not changed essentially.

Grease traps act like a retention chamber. They are plumbing devices used to stop most FOG (fat, oil, and gases) and solids so that they do not enter into the waste water disposal system, and the water component can pass through it. When FOGs and solids are accumulated, they naturally flow up to the surface of the water, and get ‘trapped’ by the grease trap. For the grease trap cleaning to be efficient, it should be cleaned at regular intervals. The FOG waste should be collected by professional licensed waste contractors, and dumped off at facilities that are built for the disposal of such waste (licensed facility). By law, grease traps should be emptied when the grease sludge is filled by 25% in the tank.  Commercial grease traps are used in kitchens of restaurants or food service departments.

FOG Programme

Many cities of Ireland are increasingly facing the issue of drain blockage in the public drainage systems caused by FOGs. This results in increased environmental pollution, such as flooding of dirt on the premises/street, and a foul smell in the atmosphere. For this reason, the capital of the country, Dublin has initiated a Programme in 2008, known as the Dublin City Council’s Fat, Oil, and Grease Programme. It is targeted towards controlling the FOG of the public drainage systems, by imposing a license that makes it obligatory to comply with the conditions of the FOG Programme, such as maintenance of commercial grease trap, appropriate disposal of the waste lubricants, size of the grease trap, and the amount of FOG that can be disposed.

If you want your grease interceptors to be effective, you should install units that are properly sized, constructed, and maintained efficiently so that it can easily be pumped by waste haulers. More so, for a healthy grease trapper, ensure that you keep it maintained by performing weekly/monthly/quarterly cleaning schedules by professionals with quality standards.

Therefore, maintenance of grease traps (or interceptors) is essential. If more spent FOG is reserved in the grease traps for a long period of time, the efficiency level of the grease trap may diminish.

Drain Cleaning & Unblocking: Ask the Experts

Because every blocked drain has a solution!

When it comes to dealing with drain clogs, many homeowners believe on-the-shelf chemical drain cleaners are sufficient. What most of us don’t know is that these chemicals can cause corrosion of pipes without actually removing the blockage. With regular use, your pipes may begin to lean and may even burst or leak . By calling a professional drain cleaning company, you won’t have to worry about harsh chemicals being used for drain unblocking, and you can be confident that the blockage will be removed completely and drain tested with guarantee

Is it Possible to Prevent drain blockages in the Future?

You can make sure that clogs do not build up as quickly after drain cleaning by maintaining your drains. Some helpful tips to prevent future clogs:

  • Keep a Check on things that go down the drain – To maintain your drains, it is important to make sure only soft things and water-soluble materials go down the drain. Solid food particles and oil or grease should not go down the drain.
  • Install Protective Screens on your drains – To prevent hard substances or water-insoluble material from going down the drain, it is a good idea to install protective screens over your drains. These screens trap solid materials and prevent them from passing down the drain.
  • Remove Sink Stoppers and Clean Regularly- In the bathroom, remove the sink stopper and clean it regularly. Avoid throwing your hair down the sink or in the bathtub or shower drain to avoid clogs. Furthermore, don’t flush toilet paper towels down toilets

By following these tips, you can make sure your drains work efficiently and prevent opportunities for drain blockages to develop. It is also a good idea to get your drains cleaned on a regular basis by a professional drain cleaning company. Needless to say, without proper maintenance, pesky clogs can sneak up on you when you least expect them and you wouldn’t want that. Would you?

Drains are the veins of your building and home. Be careful what you put down.
