What is a Septic Tank?

A septic tank is that pit that receives and treats the wastewater that comes from a house or building. Generally, a septic tank is constructed from a large box of rectangular shape, which has one or more compartments that are responsible for receiving excrement and gray water. In this pit the solid part of the wastewater is separated by a process of sedimentation, and through the so-called “septic process” stabilizes the organic matter of this water to make it into mud. Its main objective is to recycle wastewater, eliminating solid waste within a period of one to three days. Because these graves have a very high concentration of organic material and pathogenic organisms they are generally the cause of various diseases and infections.

How does a Septic Tank Function?

A sewer drainage septic tank and field form a miniature sewer system. Septic tanks are actually a rectangular container under the ground for the collection of wastewater. They are formed of cement and are waterproof tanks which are separated into chambers. The primary chamber has two times the amount of the subsequent and most of the natural concrete matter known as the sludge is set here.

The second chamber purifies the sewage. Septic tanks collect waste water from sinks, showers, toilets, laundries, etc. Owing to the lack of its presence, sludge is set to the bottom of the tank quickly. The anaerobic digestion of bacteria in the sludge directs to the formation of carbon dioxide and methane, the sludge no longer rots and is steady. The stabilized sludge particles remain, some float as slag.

The septic tank can be drained after a period of 7 years which depends on the volume of wastewater you process. The tank is cleared by employing an extractor truck driven by qualified workers. The sludge which is aspirated with the extractor truck is sent to sludge drying beds, sanitary landfills or wastewater treatment plants.

As we see, the function and proper use of septic tanks is fundamental for the maintenance of the health of our homes, as they receive the dirty water or waste water that comes from the bathroom, the kitchen, the laundry, etc. This is why it is recommended not to use water excessively, and in this way, to avoid saturation of the septic system. In addition, it is also recommended that your inspection be performed by experts, at least once a year, and thus avoid real hygiene disasters in our homes and neighborhoods.
